Next year, truck manufacturer Volvo Trucks will celebrate its 100th anniversary. Just one year after the company was founded, the Swedish manufacturer launched its first truck, the LV4, a vehicle considered highly advanced for its time. In 2027, Volvo will mark the milestone by launching its FH, FH Aero, FH16 and FH16 Aero models as the exclusive “Volvo 100 Year Edition”.

When Volvo Trucks launched its first truck in 1928, no one could have foreseen that the company would go on to become one of the world’s most successful commercial vehicle manufacturers. The Volvo LV4, also known as the “Series 1”, was powered by a 28-hp four-cylinder engine and featured a three-speed gearbox and a payload capacity of 1.5 tonnes.
For its time, it was remarkably advanced. Pneumatic tyres, shaft drive and an enclosed cab provided greater durability and comfort on Scandinavia’s often poor roads. Success was not long in coming. The first production series quickly sold out, prompting Volvo to expand production that same year.
Decarbonisation and digitalisation
A century later, the picture has changed dramatically. Modern trucks such as the Volvo FH Aero and FH16, along with their electric counterparts, stand for high energy efficiency, digital connectivity, maximum driver comfort and innovative safety systems. Electromobility and aerodynamic optimisation in particular are defining the current generation of heavy-duty long-haul trucks.
2027: The year of the special editions
To kick off its centenary cele-brations in 2027, Volvo Trucks is launching the FH, FH Aero, FH16 and FH16 Aero as the exclusive “Volvo 100 Year Edition”. The special-edition models feature an elaborately designed interior with two-tone leather seats, an embroidered anniversary emblem, illuminated entry steps and a special welcome light that projects an anniversary motif onto the ground when the door is opened. Curtains featuring historic Volvo trucks and specially designed speaker covers provide further reminders of the company’s development over the past century.
Volövo Trucks – The pinnacle of truck design
“This special edition represents the pinnacle of truck design and manufacturing at Volvo Trucks over the past century,” says Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks. With the anniversary edition, Volvo is building a bridge between its heritage as a Swedish truck pioneer and its role as a technology provider for the climate-friendly freight transport of the future. From the LV4’s modest 28 hp to today’s electric long-haul trucks, it is a century of technological development that has played a major role in shaping road freight transport.
