The international cycling initiative „GWcycles“ launched by Gebrüder Weiss set a new record in 2026. More than 1,100 participants from around the world collectively cycled over 1.6 million kilometres while simultaneously supporting environmental projects aimed at removing plastic waste from nature.

For the fifth consecutive year, the logistics provider Gebrüder Weiss organised the GWcycles campaign. Participants tracked their cycling distances using a dedicated app, with all kilometres contributing to a collective result. Whether commuting to work, training, or enjoying a leisure ride, every kilometre counted.

Cycling for the Seas

Under this year’s motto, „Cycling for the Seas,“ Gebrüder Weiss partnered with environmental organisation CleanHub. Thanks to the initiative, ten tonnes of plastic waste were removed from heavily polluted coastal and river regions. In this way, the company successfully combined the promotion of health and fitness with meaningful environmental action and measurable ecological impact.

The response exceeded all expectations. The original target of one million kilometres was reached as early as August. By the end of the campaign in late October, a total of 1,141 participants had increased the overall distance to 1,644,702 kilometres, according to company figures. This is equivalent to more than 41 circumnavigations of the Earth.

„What is particularly impressive is that participants remained highly motivated even after the original target had been achieved,“ said Peter Schafleitner, Member of the Management Board at Gebrüder Weiss. The steadily increasing level of participation demonstrates that GWcycles has successfully established itself as an international initiative.

GWcycles is open to people of all ages. To recognise participants‘ sporting achievements, they received awards for the first time in 2026, all of which were produced entirely from recycled materials.

With this record-breaking result, the Austrian logistics company, headquartered in Lauterach, Vorarlberg, aims to highlight the growing importance of initiatives that bring together physical activity, community spirit and sustainability.
