Digitalisation – Every day, NÖM processes more than 1.5 million kilograms of milk supplied by around 2,200 contract farmers, turning it into a broad range of products, from fresh milk, yoghurt and skyr to cheese products. The sheer variety of products, combined with the demands of supplying the retail sector, places correspondingly high requirements on both logistics and IT.

New High-Bay Warehouse
Against this backdrop, the company is building a new fully automated high-bay warehouse at its Baden site while simultaneously investing in a future-proof software architecture. The aim is to manage all movements of goods seamlessly on an SAP-based platform. “Investing in new automation only makes sense if the existing software setup is capable of supporting it,” said NÖM Executive Board member Josef Simon, explaining the company’s decision to pursue a consistent SAP strategy.
Digitalisation – Seamless Communication
As part of the project, KNAPP is implementing SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM), including the Material Flow System (MFS). This brings warehouse management and material flow control together on a single platform. The solution communicates directly with the PLCs controlling the automation equipment, eliminating the need for additional middleware.
Step-by-Step Implementation
The system is being rolled out gradually while operations continue. The first stage was the manual warehouse in Guntramsdorf, where SAP EWM has been coordinating all logistics processes since May 2025. Since June 2026, two expanded production lines at the company’s main site in Baden have also been controlled via SAP EWM. There, the software handles the automated receipt of finished pallets, their interim storage and the demand-driven supply of other warehouse locations. “A step-by-step approach has proven its value when implementing SAP EWM across multiple sites. It enables expertise and a thorough understanding of the system to be built up sustainably,” says Gerald Lassau, Managing Director of KNAPP IT Solutions.
Centrepiece: New Automated High-Bay Warehouse
The centrepiece of the expansion programme, however, is the new automated high-bay warehouse in Baden. The facility features eight aisles and around 26,000 pallet storage locations. Commissioning is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
With SAP EWM and MFS, the warehouse will be integrated directly into the automation environment and will operate without the need for additional warehouse control software.
For NÖM, the new end-to-end platform lays the foundation for greater transparency, higher process efficiency and improved scalability across its logistics operations. At the same time, it reduces the complexity of the IT landscape while creating much closer integration between production and warehouse processes.
